Magnomics is a SME Instrument Champion

Magnomics has been selected for the SME Instrument phase 1 initiative of Horizon2020. With this project, Magnomics will be able to determine the economic, technical, operational and legal feasibility of its innovative business concept and generate a strategic business plan to make it a reality. This is a very competitive initiative and Magnomics was one of the nine companies in Portugal to be selected (http://ec.europa.eu/easme/en/sme-instrument-beneficiaries).

This project will support the industrialization of a competitive cost-effective solution that will be integrated in the supply chain of safe, healthy and high quality food, namely milk. It will also contribute to a sustainable and more competitive agriculture, since it will allow a more resource-efficient food production. Finally, by specifically detecting bacteria in an easy and affordable manner, the resulting product will also help promote the judicious use of antibiotics, addressing the key concern of rising antimicrobial resistances.

Magnomics wins in North Carolina

Magnomics’ momentum is getting stronger, as the company won another major award by bringing home the 1st prize at the 2016 North Carolina Ag Biotech Entrepreneurial Showcase. It is only the second company in animal health to bag both the Kansas City and the North Carolina awards. The potential for synergy with similar diagnostic companies is vast in the bovine mastitis space, as clearly stated in the article in Xconomy.

“Portuguese firm Magnomics won the 2015 Innovation Award at the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor (KCAHC) Investment Forum.

Magnomics received the Innovation Award for its ‘lab-on-a-chip’ diagnostic, currently designed for the detection of bovine mastitis.

The firm claims the device can detect four types of bacterial DNA, with the potential to detect for other strains in the future, which it said makes the diagnostic unique compared to other products currently on the market because it can give more specific detail about a possible infection.

In addition, the company believes its diagnostics has an advantage over other solutions on the market because it can provide the benefits of lab-based testing but on-site.

Chief executive of the firm, João Pereira, told Animal Pharm: “Off-site you have the molecular-based and the culture-based tests. The molecular tests are fairly quick but quite expensive, and have logistics surrounding them. The culture tests can be slow. We can provide the benefits of molecular and culture diagnostics on-site within two hours.” ”

Magnomics first international coverage, by Animal Pharm

“The company’s device consists of a portable reader with inbuilt sample treatment. A sample such as a swab, urine or milk is inserted into the device and, after bacteria separation and DNA purification, DNA amplification is performed by the technology.”

“There are no molecular point-of-care tests available for bovine mastitis,” said Mr Cardoso. “There are some molecular techniques used in laboratories but they are expensive. There are also some tests that use chemical reactions to detect mastitis at the farm, but these are too broad and the commonly used cell culturing tests are too slow with results in 24 to 48 hours.”
