“The company’s device consists of a portable reader with inbuilt sample treatment. A sample such as a swab, urine or milk is inserted into the device and, after bacteria separation and DNA purification, DNA amplification is performed by the technology.”

“There are no molecular point-of-care tests available for bovine mastitis,” said Mr Cardoso. “There are some molecular techniques used in laboratories but they are expensive. There are also some tests that use chemical reactions to detect mastitis at the farm, but these are too broad and the commonly used cell culturing tests are too slow with results in 24 to 48 hours.”
